Abstract Title:
"IS40 and infrasound waves from volcanic eruptions." |
Abstract:
Rabaul Volcanological Observatory (RVO) employs a network of 15 seismic stations to monitor Rabaul volcanoes. It also monitors six other volcanoes in Papua New Guinea. Instrumentation is mainly short period single and 3-component seismometers with natural frequency around 1 Hz. During volcanic eruptions, most of them explosive, infrasound waves (air phase) are usually generated and recorded distinctly on stations 2 or more kilometers away from the source.
IS40, the infrasound station designated for Rabaul, Papua New Guinea had its site survey conducted between April and May 2001 to determine noise levels. During the site survey infrasound waves from volcanic explosions from Tavurvur were recorded. The site survey report noted noise contribution from the volcano activity.
