Abstract Title:

"Modeling of Infrasound from the Space Shuttle Columbia Reentry"
Abstract:

Infrasonic energy from supersonic bodies has been observed at short range, characterized by a direct path to the ground, and at long range, characterized by stratospheric and/or thermospheric ducting. Successful modeling of these observations relies on adequate representation of both the source trajectory and the atmospheric characteristics along the propagation path. In this study, predictions of signal arrival time, azimuth and apparent velocity are presented for the February 2003 reentry trajectory of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Infrasound is modeled using ray theory, discrete sampling of the moving source, and representations of the atmosphere that assimilate climatology with synoptic model outputs available below 50 km. Model results are compared to infrasound observations.
