"Recent Developments in Analyzing Infrasonic Signals Commonly Observed at I55US" |
Abstract:
The I55US CTBT/IMS infrasonic array at Windless Bight Antarctica, located only 25 km from Mt. Erebus, commonly observes infrasound associated with this active volcano. Signals from strombolian eruptions, with durations of about 5 seconds, are noticed almost daily between 0.1 and 10.0 Hz. More recently discovered is another class of volcanic signals created during Erebus-tremor events. These low amplitude signals have durations on the order of hours and are observed in the pass band from 1 to 10 Hz.
Other signals, not arriving from the direction of Mt. Erebus, are also commonly detected at I55US. For example, mountain associated waves (MAWs) produced by the New Zealand mountain range are observed. These MAWs are easily identified in the data set, partly due to their consistent azimuth. However, the azimuths of less well understood signals are widely scattered and their waveforms often differ in duration, amplitude, and frequency content. With the aid of an experimental near-field range detecting algorithm currently in development, these sources of infrasound in the vicinity of I55US can now be identified for the first time. We believe many of these signals are associated with natural phenomena such as avalanches and glacier movements.
