Abstract Title:
"Tracing a meteoric trajectory with infrasound" |
Abstract:
A bright bolide appeared over the Netherlands on the evening of 2003, February 19.
Infrasound generated by this bolide was detected at two nearby infrasound arrays
as two distinct events. The origins of the infrasonic signals were located in the
stratosphere at heights of 30 and 57 km. The results were obtained independently of visual
observations of the bolide but confirm the reported time of occurrence.
The ability to distinguish between a moving and static source is crucial for
the application of infrasound as a monitoring technique. This study also illustrates
the dependence of the infrasound technique on signal coherency, inter-array distance and
atmospheric knowledge. |
